The class is done, and everyone had a great time. Now I am lookinfg forward to tomorrow- Tuesday night at Smokies House of BBQ in Dana Point! Tuesday Night is Kids Night and you know what that means? Not only do the kids eat free, not only do they get to eat the best BBQ in Dana Point but Super K is there for twisting their own Balloon Masterpiece! Yup, little old me is there for your twisted entertainment as you take in the game (I think they bought all the TV’s in Best Buy!) enjoy the food, watch the Grill masters do their thing through the viewing window, and have a ball as the kids sit in the mock Jail complete with wanted posters and Iron bars. Their food is served through a small window in the bars that open up directly on the table! And then there is the Twister. I roam the aisles, twisting up hats, wands, swords, Cars, Lions, tigers, bears, Oh…Dont say it- its copywrited! LOL, and pretty much everything else a kid can dream of- Come on out and join us!

Nope, not a typo- This is really the Second class of the second class in a 4 part series. The first two were so popular that I had to schedule a second class for both the first and the second installments. So far in the first three classes I have had 80 new students wanting to learn basic flowers to add to their portfolios. I was just told that the class count for tonight is 7, a wonderful opportunity for a more intimate atmosphere, but I will see what I see when I get there. No matter how many are there we’ll have a lot of fun, and we’ll do some of the more advanced basic flowers and a few intermediate ones too. If we have time, I have a high level intermediate flower that once you get the hang of it it is really only an intermediate flower, but it perplexes the best of us till we get it.

Wednesday nights class is going to be new material! It’s going to be the  Brainiacs class; where we learn just what is a flower and what may not be. How much to put in, and what we can safely leave out, as well as some Floral design basics to get the Decor people and the twister people “crossed” over to the other sides! We will start working with new techniques- Double stuffing, using unorthodox balloons, wild colors, and more- Don’t miss this one.

JoAnn comes up with a 'Killer' new Design

Pollies Jam happened last night, the usual suspects were there. JoAnn, Myself, the Steves, Chano, Carlos, Kathy, Fred, Elizabeth and Glen all the way from Taft Ca! Don, Laura and Melinda for possibly her last So Cal Jam till she heads off into the Tennessee Sunrise. Lots more attended including a few newbies eager to learn and learn they did! We had a great time. The night seemed to take on a marine theme with Don making a huge Shark hat, Laura needing a boat load of aquatic balloons for an early Library Show and JoAnn coming up with a brand new one balloon design (plus a scrap) of a Killer Whale in a 160- Lots of twisting, lots of learning, and lots and lots of balloons! If you missed it and you know who you are because we do too, come on out to the next one! You have an open invite- no need to wait for the engraved kind, just come.

Students having fun and learning basic flowers and theory

Last night I held the second class of my first of four classes on Flowers for the Balloon Professional. If that sounded a bit Ralph Cramden-esque, you’re not alone. I find it humbling and a bit frightening to tell the truth. Here is what happened. I am scheduled to do a four part series on Flowers for Mayflower Distributing. The first class, ”Planting the Seeds” was a beginner level- the not-knowing-how-to-blow-up-a-balloon kind of beginner class. I thought we needed more of these to stimulate interest. That class quickly sold out. I was then asked to a second class, so the ones that tried to sign up for the first one but couldn’t, could go. That also sold out, but in just days after it was announced. The Second class in the series “Growing the Garden” is sold out and a second class for that one is already scheduled but not as yet advertised. We also made tentative plans for a second class for each of the remaining 2-” Know your Stuff” and “Outside the Container Garden” in case they sell out. The Humbling part is that the first three class offered are sellouts- This is the first time I have taught a class, let alone a Series! and the Frightening part? That is becasue I do not want to fall short and not deliver what I know these students want- real knowledge about how to be better twisters through their product, design and how they can increase their skills.    

So about the class! It was cool, fun, and full of people that knew how to tie and inflate. A bonus for this class. We were able to move through all the flowers, though, like most classes there were a few I could tell will need a bit more practice. This is not a dis on them, on the contrary. I have found the few that have it easy will get stuck later on on what seems to easier skills, where the ones that struggle and perservere actually become a stronger twister for it. I will be sending out emails to those who wrote theirs down to follow and encourage. It was tough for me learning. Until I found the Jamming Group I am in now, it was learn what I could where I could. In the class we did lots of the basic flowers- we made modifications to them, I was stretching their heads to see that there is more to a flower than just recipes- I don’t like recipe balloon creations. I don’t teach recipe Balloons. Take my design- change it up, make it yours- you’ll see something in there that I didn’t- maybe an entirely new flower- or animal, princess, or ….

Well, I have to get ready for class 2– it’s tomorrow night- and it’s Sold Out, so if you want to join us, you’ll have to look for the second class of the second class- but sign up quickly!

Thank you all for coming!  One of the class members came up from San Diego and one from Studio City, both eager to learn- It was truely a wonderful experience for me. I hope that you all got as much out of it as I did.  I am looking forward to another great class in June.

Tonights class, “Planting the Seeds”,  was all about the beginners; from “I haven’t ever blown up a balloon” to seasoned pros- they came to learn about balloon flowers. 26 spaces turned into 29 students (a mix up in scheduling) with 12 already in line for a second class on June 14. Basic designs covered the simple 4 petal flower to making stems, two balloon flowers, and the easy, though expensive, GEO blossom flower.   I showed a quick techique for the old standby six petal -divide-a-balloon-into-thirds-and-fold-it-over Balloons- Easier to make and even way easier with two colors. Each student got a printed handout of ALL the instructions of the nights flowers, plus three bonus designs that weren’t covered in class- They also got a headstart on registering for the second class “Growing the Garden” so if you were thinking of taking the second class, call Mayflower now and sign up.

My Beginner Class at Mayflower Distributing is Sold Out, we are however arranging a second class for the waiting list that is forming as we speak. If you are wanting to learn how to twist Balloon Flowers and are a beginner this class is for you. I cover the basics, including inflation and knot tying for those who are real beginners.  I then go on to cover the easiest of the flowers, adding more punch with each new design. Each flower adds a new skill so by the end of the class, you will not only have  a set of flowers you can do but the basictechniques to add to your animal repertoire as well. Well, the Fundraiser has come and gone with a whole lot of planning, and stress, and worry- but wow, was it worth it!  The models played their parts to perfection, and the day went off without a hitch.
